- Be honest. Why did you choose to take statistics this year? What other alternatives did you consider?
- How would you describe the study of statistics if asked by a stranger?
- Identify and describe one statistics-related news story that is currently in the news.
In addition to your post that addresses the above talking points, please respond to a comment posted by one of your classmates. Your responses are due no later than the start of class on Mon, Sep 12.
I am taking Statistics this year because it is a branch of mathematics that is really influential in the current world. The growth of our population, the percentage of college graduates, the probability of winning the lottery are all examples of practical uses of statistics. By learning how the data collection works, I believe it would be easier to understand polls and information. I really didn't have many alternatives since this is one of the last math subjects offered at WPHS.
ReplyDelete* I would describe Statistics as a mathematics used to collect and analyze data to make future predictions and solve world problems.
* A current news article is amount of damage caused by Hurricane Isaac in Louisiana
Cool news on isaac
Delete-I am taking statistics this year to give myself a better understanding of math for the SATs. Statistics is also a very applicable math to real situations in life, this makes it useful and important to know. It was also the last math that I have to take at West Point so I thought that I would go ahead and get it knocked out this year.
ReplyDelete-Statistics can be described as the mathematics of collecting, organizing, and interpreting numerical data.
-(In the News)Statistics can be used to identify and study the rise and spread of epidemics. A current news article is about the recent rise of the West Nile virus after hurricane Isaac.
*I chose to took statistics because I didn't want to take calculus this year, having another year to prep up.
ReplyDelete*Statistics is a mathematics of gathering information then organizing it and understanding what you have collected.
*Stats is being used in the presidential polls to see who is winning and by how much.
That's why I chose to take statistics too. I might need more then a year to prepare myself for calculus, more like a lifetime!
Delete-I took stats this year because i needed another math credit for my advanced diploma.
ReplyDelete-Stats is collecting data and predict the future results from what you already have.
-In elections they use stats to predict outcomes of votes.
-I am taking statistics this year because I needed another math credit and I heard this class wasn't extremely hard. I also like the 'hands on" activities.
ReplyDelete-I would describe it by explaining it as taking information about one specific topic, collecting data about that topic, and using different formulas to answer different questions.
-Elections use statistics to describe what is going on in each party.
-I'm taking statistics because I feel that's an important math for the future and it's not as hard as analysis. It applies to real world problems.
ReplyDelete- Statistics is using data to make graphs and predict future outcomes
-I would think the upcoming election would be something in the news of use for statistics
I think it really important as well.
Delete^I am taking Statistics because I want to go into Marketing & Consumer Studies in college and I know that it will involve surveys, and, well Statistics. Also I was intimidated by Calculus.
ReplyDelete^I would describe Statistics as collecting data and making it into something visual on a graph or chart
^The 2012 election involves Statistics, using polls and seeing how much of the population is for which nominee.
Hey Bethany,
DeleteThat's a very interesting field that you want to go into that will use stats everyday!
I took Statistics this year because I thought it would help me out later down the road. Having the knowledge to interpret graphs, charts, and other data would definitely benefit me.
ReplyDeleteThe other alternative to Statistics was Calculus, but I’m also taking that this year.
Statistics is pretty much a class of collecting, interpreting, and analyzing data.
Statistics is being used right now in the upcoming election. Through this, we can tell who’s winning where and how much they’re winning by.
-I'm taking Stats this year because I'm terrified of Calculus. Plus, I'm sure it will be useful to know how to analyze and gather information effectively in practically any field of study. I never really considered taking any other math class. I honestly wish I could take Stats next year too, but that would be counterproductive.
ReplyDelete-Basically, Statistics is the study of data collection and how it can be interpreted into worldly events.
-Stats is being used in the current presidential election. The votes are gathered and analyzed to determine which nominee will outnumber the rest.
I was also thinking of the presidential election while trying to decide which example to use, and it's true that statistics will be helpful in jobs and in daily life.
Delete-I'm taking Statistics this year because I believe that it will help me learn about collecting and analyzing data. I didn't really have any alternatives to this class at the moment since I'm doubling up in math.
ReplyDelete- I would describe Statistics as the mathematics of collecting and analyzing data.
-Current news involving statistics would be the unemployment rates. By looking at these statistics we can see the which states and regions have the worst job opportunities.
I also used unemployment rates for the statistics-related news story. Good post!
DeleteI chose to take statistics this year because I need it for the Pointer Pathway Program. Statistics is also very useful in real-life situations and is important to know. It is useful in not only school, but also many careers.
ReplyDeleteI did not have any other alternatives because I am taking Calculus this year. I also plan on taking Physics next year.
Statistics is collecting data, analyzing it, and presenting the data.
Statistics is currently being used to show the number of unemployed, rate of unemployment, and the prediction for the future.
Thats a real world problem that needs to be monitored carefully and a great use for stats
DeleteThat was my example too, great minds think alike!
DeleteI'm taking stats because it's a required course for the Pointer Pathway Program. I considered taking band instead, but I thought that statistics would be a better option. Statistics is the gathering and analyzing of data to help show relationships between things, and to help people have a better understanding of what is going on in the world around them. Something that was seen in a recent magazine article gave statistics to prove that the study of music can help math and reading skills.
ReplyDeleteI am taking Statistics because my brother told me that it is a class I should take before I graduate. It was either this or Calculus. I would describe it to someone as using a small sample of data to predict the larger result of data. Statistics is everywhere in the news. It is on the weather channel when they are predicting rain and also in election using it to show how many people are going to vote for a certain person.
ReplyDeleteI chose to take Statistics this year because I only needed one more math credit for an advanced diploma and I'm beyond scared to even go near Calculus. I also thought the class itself sounded interesting and fun.
ReplyDeleteI'd define statistics as basically the organizing, gathering, and analyzing of data.
Statistics is used often in the news, but one example would be the current employment rate in our country.
